Course Description
This course is
designed to assist the learner in enhancing their perspective of the role,
functions and purpose of the police organization and management structure. The
intent of the course is to integrate the learners experiences into the larger
picture of the police organization and their role in that structure as a
supervisor, manager or executive. The format for this class will include
readings, online & library research, and other individualized learning
experiences.
Learning Outcomes
After reading the material listed or
any other related materials to the topic, the student will be able to:
a. Compare and contrast civil and criminal sanctions against
illegal or unethical
behavior
b. Distinguish between liability issues of failure to train
and failure to supervise
c. Identify red flags or warning signs of behavior indicative
of potential problems
with employees
d. Describe common themes as addressed in the various
commission reports on
police abuse, misconduct or
corruption
e. Distinguish legal liability from failure to protect cases,
particularly in Domestic
Violence cases
f. Analyze key issues in failure to adhere to legal,
statutory or case law mandates,
such as violations of search and seizure,
the exclusionary rule or failure to
admonish of ones rights, per Miranda.
Learning Experiences
In addition to reading the material below, the student can also read other texts
on the subject, view films, attend lectures, workshops, relate to work
experiences as well as interview others in the field of legal aspects in
criminal justice.

üNote: The course is divided into four modules: Each Module has topics
that
should
all be addressed in single paper; with a minimum of 5-7 pages
for
each module. APA Style is strongly encouraged.
üNote:
Learner's should download a learning
agreement, review, complete the
highlighted areas (consult your advisor regarding number of units, semester
information, etc.) and sign it. Once the learning agreement has been
signed, contact the instructor for direction on returning it. A learning
agreement must be completed in the first week and before any instruction
can take place.
